It’s the undisputed highlight on the calendar of the world’s most populous country and we know it as the Chinese New Year – a time for celebration, contemplation, family gatherings and great food.
For 2021, the Chinese New Year falls on 12 February, ushering in what will be known as ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’, or ‘Year of the Ox’ – an animal known for its strength, reliability, calmness, patience and trustworthiness. Confidence-inspiring, strong-willed and sometimes stubborn, the Ox shares many characteristics with us humans and the Chinese traditions surrounding celebrating different animals stretch back thousands of years.
At the luxurious Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s award-winning restaurant, Dai Pai Dong, the Chinese New Year celebrations promise to be extra special with three individually themed offerings, starting on 12 February with the ‘All-Day Prosperity Feast’ which will feature a special Chinese New Year Yee Sheng Salad called Lo Hei (meaning ‘family reunion’) and dumplings known as Jiaozi (or ‘good luck’). Running between midday and 11 PM, three-hour brunch packages are available from AED 388 per person.
From 13 to 25 February, a special Family Style eight-course set menu will also feature Lo Hei and Steamed Whole Fish. In Chinese tradition, eating fish during the New Year is an expression of goodwill to others. This special menu is priced at AED 298 per person and reservations are required and is available between midday and 11 PM.
Rounding off the festivities will be the Lantern Festival menu on 26 February, featuring an incredible array of premium and traditional dishes. These include Chinese New Year Tang Yuan(glutinous rice balls), which are symbolic in Chinese culture as bringing family safety and unity. Running between midday and 11 PM,three-hour brunch packages are priced from AED 388 per person.
Dai Pai Dong’s Chef De Cuisine, Dong Nie, said that the restaurant’s menu options include something for everyone, commenting: “Tradition is a huge part of China’s culture and central to this is family and celebration. That’s why we have put together such inclusive offerings with a particular focus on catering for groups in a safe and hospitable environment. The entire team here is looking forward to a spectacular new year celebration over two weeks, serving the very best Chinese cuisine in one of Abu Dhabi’s most welcoming restaurants.”
