Mooncake Festival

It is said that the custom of eating mooncakes in the Mid-Autumn Festival began in the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD). The Tang Emperor Li Shimin ordered a general called Li Jing to battle the Turks. On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, Li Jing returned triumphantly. A trader from Tibet offered some round cakes to Li Shimin to congratulate him on his victory. Li Shimin was very happy to receive this gift and the round cakes became popular in the palace and among the folk. People ate the round cakes on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month and the name of the cake was changed to ‘Moon Cake’ during the reign of a later Tang emperor. Moon Cake is used in a Chinese custom of worshiping the moon. The Mid-Autumn moon is round and moon cakes are fragrant and sweet. During the festival, the whole family sits together and eats Moon Cake and fruits, and this custom has now become a symbol of family reunion. Join us at Dai Pai Dong for this delicious and intriguing taste of pastry and history. The Dai Pai Dong Moon Cake is part of our a la carte menu from 1 – 21 September and is priced at AED 68 for three pieces.
